catcher part uno

one total connection stood out to me...so holden is sorta bitter about his brother having "sold out" to hollywood...when he could've became a real writer, whatever thats supposed to mean...in the movie RENT, Marc signs on to be a filmer for a corporate newstation, for money, instead of being an independent film artist (which was his true calling)...i like this book so far, as it is much more easier to relate to because so far he's not too screwed up and isn't a middle aged woman...in fact, Holden seems to be cynical but not in a scary way...he just seems to be really hard on himself which could be scary, and he looks at himself as a failure...however, it is clear that Holden could be turning slightly suicidal which again is not a surprise since the past two books we've read had depressed characters too...Holden seems to have his conflict in life all figured out...him against the world...which is going to result in his overall unhappiness

WOAHHH props to you on that connection. LOVE RENT and you're totally right! Maybe Holden's unhappiness comes from his attempt not to sell out. He doesn't want to be like all of the snobby bastards he goes to school with. Instead of praising their world he finds every way to criticize it in his own head. BUT-- in reality he cares more about what people think than he gives himself credit for. Holden's trying not to sell out to conforming to society but its been very difficult for him.
