omg this book was sick i loved it...for this blog im gonna type quotes or specific examples nd what i think about it etc
-"He had long stopped being my father. He was now my interrogator, my cross-examiner. The sheriff. My uncle's brother." - pg 98...i really believe that throught the book Wesley is constantly struggling between his position as a father/brother and his position as a sheriff. Wesley is faced with decisions that make him decide which part of his life is more important.
-"...then why have you got him locked up here and not over at the jail? This is your brother here. My son!" - pg 116...another major conflict within the story is Wesleys approval of his father. It is clear that Julian always looked at Frank as the better son. He took more pride in calling Frank his song than calling Wesley his soon.
-On page 123 David describes how the boy in him wanted chocolate cake..even though throughout this nightmare, David is forced to act mature, readers neglect to realize that David is still a young boy with the same desires and same reactions...even though he's trying his best to be an adult he realizes that the chocolate cake proves what a boy he still is
-On page 125 David says that he became emotional not about all the things that are going on but about how he will not see his horse Nutty again...this is the repitition of denial throughout the story
-it is hard for David to accept the realities of outside opinion on this situation...being a Hayden is an honor, however Uncle Frank's actions are going to turn the entire community against them
-As i said in this blog and the one before this denial is a major theme --> "'And then what? If you know something for sure, you've got to act on that knowing. It's better this way. You know what you want Wes to do. It'll be a lot easier for him if he doesn't know too much"
-Loyalty is also a major theme...Wesley battles with the loyalty to justice and community or the loyalty to his brother and emotionally abusive father...David says something very important about this "'I wasn't protecting her--I no longer had any illusions that i could play that role--but i stayled out of loyalty. I wasn't sure what our family had become in those troubled days, but i knew we had to stay close together."
-Also the author describes the setting/weather on page 154 as gloomy and grey this is foreshadowing the events of Uncle Frank's death
*overall i loved the book...i liked how it was short and even though i totally predicted Frank's suicide...i did not predict that he had killed Marie...i really thought she died of an illness..i really liked the reocurring symbols like wind, guns, whiskey, horses (these were all forms of escape -- a major theme) and i also loved how in the end Wesley knew what the right thing to do was even though he had a sense of commitment to his brother...i just lUvEd daaa boookkk peaceee outtt
